BESSEMER - The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners voted 6-1 Wednesday Night to send the proposed county budget for 2025-26 to a public hearing and final vote on September 24 at 5:00pm at the Gogebic County Courthouse in Bessemer. This includes slashing the 4-H funding from a full-time position to part time position. Other budget issues to be brought to the public hearing include but not limited to: Slashing County Fair funding to the Friends of the Fair, pay increases for some county officials and transportation of the deceased for autopsies. Several citizens at the County Board meeting last night spoke out against making the 4-H coordinator Ashley Dennis salary part time. The only County Commissioner voting against the proposed budget was Joe Cayer (R) Ironwood. At the meeting, the County Commission also voted 7-0 to denounce Aspirus Ironwood Hospital for closing their OB-GYN care and ceasing the births of babies at the Ironwood Hospital.
