UPPER MICHIGAN - Michigan has issued key state permits for Enbridge’s proposed Line 5 tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac, clearing the way for expected federal approval.

State officials said the project’s safety benefits outweigh impacts to wetlands, wildlife, and Native American burial sites. Opponents, including the Bay Mills Indian Community, vowed to sue, while supporters say the tunnel will reduce the risk of oil spills and protect the region’s energy supply. Originally expected to cost $500 million and be complete by 2024, the project now looks to cost billions, with construction not expected to finish until at least 2030
