UPPER MICHIGAN – In the early hours of Saturday morning, a canoe carrying three people in Copper Harbor capsized two died. One of the three was able to make it back to shore shortly before 4 am and called 911 to report the emergency. the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor Fire, U.S. Coast Guard (with helicopter support), Michigan DNR, and the Michigan State Police Dive team all responded. The body of one of the two remaining in the water was recovered Saturday and crews worked on Sunday until the body of the second person was found. The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office thanked the rescue crews on hand and representatives from the American Red Cross, Salvation Army as well as businesses and restaurants in the community who provided supplies, food and support during the operation.
