UPPER MICHIGAN - Some Democratic lawmakers say they want to protect the night skies in the U.P. for future generations with a Dark Sky legislation, while some Republicans say this new bill could hurt the economy. Dark sky preserves are areas intentionally kept dark from lights to protect locations perfect for star gazing. Downstate Democrat Rep. Julie Brixie is pushing the bill.  U.P. Republican Sen. Ed McBroom says dark sky preserves could be used to slow or halt mining projects in the U.P.  The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Government Operations. It must pass this committee, the House and Senate before it could be signed into law by Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
