ASHLAND - There's a new four-legged recruit at the Ashland Sheriff’s Department.

Through the generous gift by a private donor, the department now has a K-9 officer.  “Doc” arrived a few weeks ago from Hungary and will spend some time training in Minneapolis before joining the department as a fully-fledged working dog.  Sheriff Brian Zupke says Doc will be a game changer for the department since previously he’d have to call the Ashland Police Department or Bayfield  Sheriff’s office if they needed the help of a canine officer.  While Doc is in training, a specially equipped squad car to ensure the dog's safety will be acquired by the department, paid for with a grant from the donor who supplied Doc.  Sheriff Zupke says he’d like to secure another dog for the department once Doc is on the force.
