GOGEBIC / IRON COUNTY – Local Law Enforcement touting the benefits of the highly controversial flock cameras in Gogebic and Iron Counties. Deputy Sheriff Mike Randall said the cameras capture license plates and vehicle details, but do not use facial recognition. He said three county cameras have helped locate missing or dangerous people, while the Gogebic-Iron County Area Narcotics team has used them in cases resulting in more than 50 felony convictions. Critics raised privacy and misuse concerns. Randall explained that motorists have no reasonable expectation of privacy, and Sheriff Paul Samardich said the county can disconnect the cameras if needed.
