UPPER MICHIGAN -  U.P. Republican State Representative Karl Bohnak is proposing legislation to keep natural gas plants open. The bill aims to keep the RICE generators in the U.P. open and operating as they are today. The legislation would exempt natural gas-fueled generators from the state’s 2023 clean energy laws. Bohnak says the key reason is to maintain a reliable energy source in the Upper Peninsula.  There are currently three units in Marquette, Seven in Negaunee and three in the L’Anse/Baraga area.  The energy committee needs to review the bill before the full House can vote on it. It would also need approval from the Democratic-led Senate and from Democrat Governor Governor Whitmer.
