IRONWOOD - Aspirus Ironwood Hospital nurses will rally from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at US-2 and Oak Lane near the hospital, Nurses protesting the planned closure of the OB/GYN unit at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital at the end of this year and to seek a fair union contract. Aspirus will still offer pre- and post-natal care. local Michigan Nurses Association president, RN Sarah Trudgeon criticized Aspirus for rejecting $1.2 million in state funds to protect OB services. Nurses have been without a contract since August 2nd. The Michigan Nurses Association has confirmed this is not a work stoppage. Aspirus cites national and regional OB/GYN shortages for it’s decision. The nearest alternative for labor and delivery is Tamarack Health in Ashland, about an hour away.

IRONWOOD – Ironwood Public Safety holding a surplus sale through the 29th.  The sale includes several vehicles, some in running others in non-running condition.  The property / Items being sold may be inspected at 205 W Aurora St., Ironwood.  Bids must be signed at the bottom of both pages by the bidder and delivered by mail or in person in a sealed envelope not later than September 29th, at 3:00 pm to the city offices at the Memorial Building.  Bids will be reviewed, and awards made, or bids rejected at a City of Ironwood Commission meeting on October 13th, 2025.  Successful bidders will be notified by telephone, U.S. Mail, or e-mail.  We have a link on the WUPM Facebook page with more information on the items being sold, rules and conditions.

UPPER MICHIGAN - The inaugural Great Lakes Aurora Dark Sky Jamboree, or “Glad Jam,” drew star gazers to the Copper Country this past weekend. The four-day festival celebrated the northern lights and the Keweenaw Peninsula’s unique beauty, offering guided hikes, photography workshops, and expert advice. The event began Friday at Michigan Tech’s Rozsa Center, featuring speakers like Michigan Aurora Chasers founder and Visit Keweenaw director, Brad Barnett. Barnett highlighted activities such as dark sky viewing parties, bonfires, and twilight yoga, encouraging attendees to experience the Keweenaw’s outdoor offerings and dark skies.
