UPPER MICHIGAN – On the Michigan side Governor Gretchen Whitmer filed a response brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Enbridge’s lawsuit over the Line 5 dual pipelines under the Straights of Mackinac Friday. Governor Whitmer’s brief, stated that Line 5 constitutes an unparalleled risk to the public and the health of the Great Lake and that Enbridge has a “troubling environmental record.” The pipelines sit exposed on the lakebed in the Straits of Mackinac and transport oil through the Great Lakes. Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources revoked Enbridge’s easement in November 2020. Enbridge then filed a lawsuit, seeking an injunction to stop the State of Michigan from taking any steps to prevent the operation of Line 5.
