GOGEBIC COUNTY - Michigan is proposing new river protections for the Saxon Falls and Superior Falls hydropower dams on the Montreal River in Gogebic County along the Wisconsin border. The rules would limit dam operations and require monitoring of river flow, temperature, dissolved oxygen, sediment, and fish contamination. The dams would have to operate in run-of-river mode, with minimum downstream flows, and provide real-time flow data to the public. Michigan officials say the protections are needed because the Montreal River is a designated trout stream. Public comments are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 11. The requirements must be approved before federal regulators can issue new licenses for the dams.
