ONTONAGON - Senior Service Organization in the Western U.P. Needs Volunteers As the elderly population in Ontonagon County, Upper Peninsula, grows, so does the demand for medical assistance. Ontonagon has the highest senior population in the U.P. The Upper Michigan Chapter of Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly is addressing this with their “Drive to Care” initiative, but they need community support. Currently, the program only have five drivers to transport Ontonagon seniors to medical appointments. Little Brothers urges community members to volunteer, especially after the closure of Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital, which identified medical transportation as a vital need. Little Brothers estimates at least 10 volunteer drivers are needed. Requirements include being 19 or older with a clean driving record. Volunteers use their own vehicles and receive mileage reimbursement. Interested individuals can find more information and apply through their website, at lbfemichigan.org/volunteer.
