UPPER MICHIGAN – Yesterday Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a partnership with the nonprofit organization, Undue Medical Debt.  Undue Medical Debt purchases qualifying medical debt in bulk “for pennies” from providers like hospitals and collection agencies.  In order to qualify, people must earn four times or below the federal poverty level, or have medical debt that is five percent or more of their annual income.  The Governor announced this would be the “first round of medical debt forgiveness” and would help 210,000 Michigan residents save more than $144 million.  The state allocated $4.5 million in the 2024 budget for medical debt relief.
