UPPER MICHIGAN - School districts across the U.P and the state are starting their fiscal year without a final K-12 state budget which is causing frustration to school districts. July 1 was the statutory deadline to approve the budget for the 2026 fiscal year. Typically, state lawmakers pass two budgets: the school aid budget, which applies to K-12 schools, and the general fund budget, which allocates funding to state departments and education beyond K-12 neither has been approved.  The earliest lawmakers can meet to further discuss the budget is July 15.
