GOGEBIC COUNTY - A fight over the proposed Copperwood Mine in Gogebic County could have statewide consequences for the endangered redside dace, a rare fish found in just six Michigan counties. A proposed wastewater permit would allow the mine to discharge up to 500,000 gallons of treated wastewater per day into a nearby creek. EGLE and Highland Copper say the discharge site is upstream of the fish’s known range and is not expected to affect it. Environmental groups say the Copperwood mine's permit could set a negative precedent for protecting the species, while state regulators continue reviewing the project.
