IRONWOOD – Over the 4th of July weekend the Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus posted on their Facebook page that Greg Basom will no longer be holding The Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds. The post states that in previous years the county allowed them use of the facility for free, provided they paid the excess water and power during the time they use the facility. Now they say the new management organization, a non-profit Organization called Friends of the Fair, wants to charge $2500 for the use of the facility, a $500 “Security deposit” and $1000 to be paid prior to each race, in addition to water and power bills, with no contractual guarantee that they will have access to equipment needed for the track building process. It’s not clear weather or not the group that holds the Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus is actively looking for an alternative site the post simply says “Thank you very much to everyone who supported Greg as he tried to keep the sport alive in Ironwood. We look forward to seeing everyone at the races, just because we are no longer hosting a race at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds does not mean that we intend to walk away from the sport entirely. It was great while it lasted but all good things must come to an end.”
