LANSING - Proposed state legislation in Michigan looks to increase penalties for drivers who hit cyclists.  Michigan House Bill 5223 and House Bill 5224, along with Senate Bill 617 and Senate Bill 618 look to implement additional sentencing options for drivers who hit vulnerable roadway users.  This includes pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages and cyclists.  Currently a driver who hits a cyclist can be charged with a 93-day misdemeanor.  The proposed new laws would add two potential felony charges based on the injuries to the rider.  The two-House bills will now be reviewed by the Senate and the Senate bills reviewed by the House.
