ASHLAND - The Ashland Police Department has a new chief. Thirty-eight-year-old Brandon Marten officially succeeds former Chief Bill Hagstrom, who retired May 1.

Marten joined the department in 2017 after previously serving with the Savage Police Department in Minnesota and was promoted to lieutenant in 2021. Before entering law enforcement, Marten worked as a licensed boat captain on Lake Superior and the Mississippi River. As chief, The Ashland Daily Press reports Marten says his priorities include strengthening community relationships, supporting officer wellness, and addressing ongoing recruitment challenges facing law enforcement agencies in northern Wisconsin.
