BESSEMER TOWNSHIP – The Bessemer Township Fire Department was dispatched at 12:56 PM to a reported brush/grass fire on River St unknown of size. Upon arrival, crews located approximately a half-acre of grass and brush actively burning.  The fire originated from open burning conducted while a county-wide burn ban was in effect. The fire spread beyond the intended burn area into surrounding vegetation.  Fire conditions allowed the flames to extend to a nearby residence, resulting in damage to vinyl siding on the structure. Crews acted quickly to protect the home and prevent further extension.  Fire crews cleared the scene just over an hour later.  The homeowner was cited for open burning while a burn band was in effect. Residents are reminded to follow all burn bans and local regulations. Despite rain overnight the fire danger remains at VERY HIGH for Gogebic, Iron, Ashland, Bayfield, and Price Counties.
