ASHLAND COUNTY - Enbridge has begun cutting trees in the path of its 41-mile Line 5 relocation in Ashland County, despite ongoing legal challenges from the Bad River Band and environmental groups. Opponents fear the reroutes high number of waterway and wetland crossings (186 and 101 acres, respectively) will damage tribal resources and cite Line 5’s spill history. The project is tied to a federal order, currently on hold, requiring the pipeline off reservation land by mid-2026. Canada has intervened, citing a 1977 treaty. Enbridge argues the relocation, which moves 540,000 barrels per day, is vital for regional energy and will create jobs. Key court hearings in April will determine the future of the project.
