LANSING - A new bill that stands to raise the wages for both tipped and non-tipped employees in Michigan passed the state house yesterday.  The “Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act” passed with 69 “yes” votes and 40 “no” votes.  As passed by the House, Senate Bill 8 would increase the minimum wage in Michigan to $15/hour by 2027.  For tipped employees, it would increase their wage from 38% of the minimum wage by 2% each year before capping out at 50% of the minimum wage in 2031.  The bill is also tied to legislation with provisions for sick leave.  The bill now returns to the Senate.  The legislation must be approved by Governor Whitmer by Friday.
