LANSING - Michigan lawmakers are seeking answers after the state shelved a $1.1 million report on Native American boarding schools. Bridge Michigan reports a House subcommittee set a hearing for Feb. 27 to try and determine why the study was scrapped. A consulting firm finished the 300-page report in September, but the state never released it and a summary presented to lawmakers left out recommendations. Michigan’s tribes had hoped a report would document the abuses and deaths of Native American children over more than a century in state boarding schools, as well as determine the extent to which the state and local municipalities were involved.
