WAKEFIELD – Funding for the Cooperwood Project just north of Wakefield in question after The Senate Appropriations Committee meeting scheduled for yesterday morning was canceled. The House Appropriations Committee approved the of $50 million for the project but the funding has stalled in the Senate Committee.  State Senator Ed McBroom says this transfer could allow for more than just the Copperwood Mine Project. The infrastructure upgrades could lead to other economic developments in the area.  Meanwhile the group Protect the Porkies opposes the mine saying “Regardless of the outcome, they will continue fighting to protect the Upper Peninsula’s iconic wilderness and has an online petition that has collected more than 300,000 signatures opposing the transfer.  Copperwood promises the project will bring more than 300 permanent jobs.  The Appropriations Committee could still meet any single day all the way until the end of the year.
