WESTERN U.P. - Two U.P. foundations, Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and Superior Health Foundation, are jointly awarding a $20,000 grant, $10,000 from each to food pantries in Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties.
Copper Shores CEO Kevin Store explained the partnership addresses uncertain SNAP funding and low supplies. Store noted the significant need, with over 20% of the community in poverty and nearly 49% as asset-limited, income-constrained households, a struggle amplified during the holidays and winter. The foundation is also seeking collaboration with the Michigan Health Endowment Fund to address physical limitations such as lack of space or coolers and increase pantry capacity. Recipients include Holy Family St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in Ontonagon, and Sacred Heart St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in L’Anse, both of which received $3,500,
