BARAGA COUNTY – Yesterday the Ottawa National Forest issued a press released an update on the Summit Lake Fire burning in Baraga County.  The Forest Service says the fire continues to remain within its’ existing footprint thanks to firefighting efforts as well as rain and snow. Firefighters have effectively secured the west and southwestern flanks of the fire where the priority has been to protect private lands. As of November 6, 2024, just after 1:00 PM CST. the temporary closure order of the northern half of the McCormick Wilderness was terminated and lifted. Firefighters are continuing to reinforce firelines when needed and monitor to ensure the fire has stayed within its footprint.  The fire was first discovered on October 18, 2024, on the Northwest corner of the McCormick Wilderness between Summit Lake and Evergreen Lake 12.5 miles north of Michigamme, Michigan.
