WAKEFIELD - Support for the Copperwood Mine in Gogebic County has been withdrawn by Northern Michigan University. University President Brock Tessman wrote a letter to the CEO of InvestUP and said his understanding of the impact the mine had grown and that he understood that it would not be of as much benefit to the U.P. as he originally understood. U.P. legislators have expressed their opposition to the withdrawal of NMU support, stating the mine could support more than 700 people directly and indirectly. The Copperwood project remains on hold, as the Michigan Senate did not approve the $50 million in state money for the mine in the last legislative session.
