WASHBURN - The 19th annual Ashwabay Summit Nordic Ski Race is scheduled for February 1st. The course takes competitors to the top of the hill through beautiful, forested areas, culminating in a great view of Lake Superior. There are 15 and 30K events to choose from either in the classic or skating technique. There is also a skiathalon, in which both skiing techniques are used, much like the Winter Olympics. Skiing takes place all day long, with more than 100 skiers from at least a dozen colleges competing, as the event is part of conference qualifying. New this year, the Summit race is part of the “Tour de Finn” series of races where finishers can earn points. All funds raised during the event benefit the non-profit host of the event, Mt. Ashwabay, nordic grooming operations and youth programs for more information go to ashwabaysummitskirace.com.
