MARQUETTE - Due to overcrowding at the Marquette County Jail, several inmates have been transferred to the facilities in Iron and Alger Counties.

The ok to move those inmates was given on Tuesday night. As of last week, the jail was holding 90 inmates when capacity of the facility is 80. Complaints about early release of prisoners due to overcrowding have come from the community. Sheriff Greg Zyburt says the decision to transfer an inmate is made only with sentenced prisoners with non-medical issues who are not combative. Those considered to be a flight risk or a failure to appear are not moved. Plans are still in the works for a new Marquette County Jail.
