GOGEBIC / ONTONAGON COUNTY – The fire danger is increasing once again in Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties.  As of this morning the fire danger is at the moderate level and burn bans are in effect and no burning permits are being issued.

ONTONAGON - Ontonagon Area Schools is asking voters to renew its bus maintenance millage for another five years on the November 3 ballot. The 0.42-mill levy would help fund replacing three buses in the district’s fleet. Superintendent Lisa Johnson says the district’s four bus routes cover more than 75,000 miles each school year, making regular bus replacement essential, especially given harsh winter conditions. The district also schedules millage requests strategically to limit sudden tax increases for residents. Voters should check the back of their ballots for local proposals. N. WISCONSIN - Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany is proposing a bill of rights for parents and teachers, which includes requiring parental permission for students who want to change their names and pronouns at school and banning transgender students from bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity. Under his proposal, transgender girls would be prohibited from participating on girls’ sports teams and using girls’ locker rooms and bathrooms in schools, schools would be prohibited from placing tampons in boys’ bathrooms and “gender transition procedures” would be prohibited for those under 18.  His proposal would allow teachers to remove violent or disruptive students; require behavior intervention plans before a student could be returned to a classroom; prohibit retaliation against teachers for enforcing classroom rules, reporting unsafe conditions, requesting assistance or taking appropriate action to protect students; and establish school safety and parental notification requirements.  Wisconsin Republicans introduced numerous bills that would implement a parents’ bill of rights which have been repeatedly vetoed by Governor Tony Evers.
