UPPER MICHIGAN - The Michigan D-N-R is conducting walleye recruitment surveys on Michigan waters through mid-October. Crews are using electrofishing boats at night to capture young walleye in shallow, nearshore areas. Biologists use the surveys to determine whether young fish were hatched in the wild or came from stocking, and how many are present. The data helps guide fishery management decisions. The D-N-R says the boats will stun, not electrocute, the fish for a minute or two. Boaters and anglers should use caution near survey boats and leave the water when crews approach.
