ONTONAGON - Twenty-seven threatened lake sturgeon have been rescued from isolated pools in a low-flow section of the Ontonagon River. The Michigan DNR, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and Upper Peninsula Power Company conducted three rescue missions downstream from Victoria Dam. Crews carried the fish to flowing water, including one sturgeon measuring 55 inches. The DNR says losing all 27 would have seriously harmed the recovering river population. The agency is now reviewing flow and temperature data to prevent future strandings.
