LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s governor is pressing state lawmakers to avert a government shutdown that looms around the same time Congress contends with a potential shutdown of the U.S. government. Partisan politics in Michigan’s split Legislature has resulted in a monthslong legislative stalemate. Michigan has until Oct. 1 to pass a budget. Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called on lawmakers Tuesday to break the deadlock. Whitmer says Michigan is particularly influenced by broader economic trends in the U.S. and state budget woes would create mass economic uncertainty.
