LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has called a special election for a state Senate seat that has been vacant for nearly nine months. Kristen McDonald Rivet vacated the seat when she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November. Republicans have repeatedly slammed Whitmer for leaving the 35th Senate District without representation in the Legislature all year. If Republicans win the seat, the partisan control of the Senate would be tied 19-19, spelling major consequences for Whitmer's final year in office.
