BAYFIELD - At their last meeting, the Bayfield County Board voted to oppose a proposal put forth by Congressman Tom Tiffany to make the Apostle Islands a national park.

Tiffany’s put forth the proposal hoping it would boost tourism to the area, but county leaders have been critical, saying that the Congressman didn’t coordinate with local government or ask for public feedback before introducing the proposal. They also have said the designation would affect hunting opportunities and didn’t really help Bayfield County diversify its economy. County board members say they’ve contacted Tiffany’s office to voice their concerns. The Congressman has countered that he has had consultation with local officials and the community and will continue to be open to public input.
