VILAS COUNTY - The Eagle River Fire Department is considering shifting from an all-volunteer model to a combination department with paid firefighters on duty 24/7. Chief Jim Randall says the change would improve response times, especially for medical calls, which have more than tripled this year. The plan would raise the annual budget from about $496,000 to $1.2 million, or roughly three times the current cost. Municipal officials have expressed concerns about the increase, and a referendum could go before voters this fall, with implementation targeted for January 2027.
