WAKEFIELD - Wakefield Township pushed for an economic investment in Lansing yesterday.  During a testimony before the House Appropriations Subcommittee Representative Dave Prestin (R-108th State House District) said funds would be used by Wakefield Township to upgrade roads, power grids and telecommunication systems to attract new industries and employers including the Copperwood Mine.  The Copperwood Mine would NOT receive any of these funds. Instead, supporters say it would create a stronger foundation on which new employers could build upon including for the mine.  Highland Copper’s separate request in December for $50 million still awaits the Senate’s approval. If yesterday’s proposal for the township moves forward, that Senate proposal would die. And if the Senate proposal moves forward, Wakefield Township would end this push for funds.  Protect the Porkies responded saying that Michigan tax payers funding a Canadian-owned mine is unreasonable.
