MADISON - Months of state budget negotiations between Gov. Tony Evers and Republican lawmakers have collapsed this week.  Gov. Evers said in a statement yesterday that no compromise had been made on the 2025-27 Biennial Budget.  He added that he had agreed to a Republican proposal that mainly targeted income tax. Meanwhile, he said the GOP is not aligned on his proposals for childcare, K-12 schools and the UW System.  Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Joint Finance Committee co-chair Rep. Mark Born said Republicans are open to further discussions with the governor, “In hopes of finding areas of agreement,” but currently, “It appears the two sides remain far apart.”  State law requires a new budget to be passed by June 30. If that doesn’t happen, the state will operate under its current spending plan until a new one is signed into law.
