VILAS COUNTY — As summer quickly approaches, Vilas County public health officials are warning people about the dangers of ticks and urging them to take precautions before heading outside.  Tick season in Northern Wisconsin typically begins in late spring as temperatures warm. The most common ticks found in Northern Wisconsin are wood ticks and deer ticks that tend to live in wooded and brush-filled areas.  Vilas County is considered a high-risk area for tick-borne illness with over 140 reported cases of tickborne illness like Lyme Disease in summer 2024.  Precautions against ticks include using insect repellent and wearing light colored, protective clothing.  If you believe you are presenting any symptoms of a tickborne illness, contact your physician as soon as possible.
