IRON COUNTY - The Iron County Board of Supervisors has officially approved a resolution authorizing the Forestry and Parks Department to proceed with the acquisition of a significant parcel of land in the town of Mercer. The pivotal decision concerns 51.91 acres, which will be purchased from the Union Pacific Railroad for $$120,000. The funding structure for the purchase will be a blend of external grant money, most of which will come from the Wisconsin DNR. The remaining balance, up to $45,000, will be covered by funds allocated from the county budget to finalize the transaction. The addition of this parcel is expected to significantly enhance the county's public land holdings, particularly in the Mercer area, and could open up new possibilities for recreational trail development or other public access initiatives along the historic railway path.
