GOGEBIC COUNTY - Critical state funding for a Copperwood Mine copper mining project in Gogebic County is nearing approval.  The project would bring jobs and development to the region, but some argue the mine would be harmful to the environment.  Marty Fittante, the CEO of Invest UP, praised the project for the roughly 380 jobs and would bring lasting development to the area.  The Protect the Porkies campaign started a year and a half ago opposing the mining project with concerns about potential long-lasting damage to the untouched wilderness and environmental risks.  Critical state funding for the Copperwood Mine Project is awaiting approval by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The project already attained funding approval from the House Appropriations Committee.  The mine would be built in the Western U.P. 14 miles north of Wakefield.
