ONTONAGON - An Ontonagon man has been sentenced for stealing money from an elderly woman while acting as her power of attorney. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel reported in September, Richard Filbey, 62, pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult of $100K or more and one count of tax fraud after acting as power of attorney for the 82-year-old woman. He convinced the victim to surrender two of her annuities totaling over $275,000 and sold property the victim owned then used the money for himself. Richard Filbey was sentenced to two years in prison and was ordered to pay over $280K in restitution. He agreed to surrender property he owned to be sold, and the proceeds used make that restitution.
