IRONWOOD - Permitting is nearly complete for the controversial underground copper mine proposed by Canadian company, Highland Copper. The site of the mine is in the U.P., near the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and upslope from Lake Superior. The public still has time to comment on the air permit from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. The permit is meant to restrict pollutants released during mining and to ensure the company meets federal and state air quality standards. State officials said they don’t have a timeline for a decision on the permit after the comment period ends. More information is available at michgan.gov/egle.
