UPPER MICHIGAN - Michigan regulators approved a $33 million rate increase for SEMCO Energy Gas on October 15, less than the $61 million requested. Starting January 1, 2027, a typical household using 10 dekatherms monthly will pay $2.80 more. SEMCO serves about 300,000 customers across Michigan’s Upper and southern Lower Peninsulas. The commission also approved an infrastructure charge starting at 19 cents per month and increasing through 2031. The plan funds pipeline upgrades, including replacement of 37 miles of aging gas lines annually. SEMCO is in the process of taking over gas service to communities on the Gogebic Range currently served by XCEL Energy sometime next year but promises that SEMCOs higher rates compared to XCEL would NOT immediately take effect.
