UPPER MICHIGAN - Michigan will ban untreated firewood from entering the state starting January 1, 2027, to prevent invasive insects and plant diseases from spreading. The quarantine affects Upper Peninsula residents bringing firewood from Wisconsin to properties in border counties. Exceptions include properly heat-treated, certified firewood, kiln-dried lumber, and wood pellets. The Michigan Department of Agriculture says the goal is to protect forests and agricultural resources. State officials plan to focus on education and public awareness throughout 2027.
