UPPER MICHIGAN - A report from Michigan State University says Michigan teachers are leaving the field at an unsustainable rate. The report released Thursday highlights a reliance on temporary or interim credentials. Despite progress in recruitment, the state struggles with stability. During the last academic year, nearly 8,000 teachers left, while 7,900 entered the field. Michigan has spent $275 million over five years to address this, including scholarships and stipends. However, 5.3% of teachers lack certification, and 3% are still in training. Special education faces particularly high vacancies and attrition rates, prompting calls for increased funding and support.
