VILAS COUNTY - Gov. Tony Evers has appointed Gerard Ritter as Vilas County Sheriff. The appointment fills a vacancy being created by Sheriff Joseph A. Fath’s retirement. Ritter will complete the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2027.  Ritter has been a law enforcement officer since 1998 and joined the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office in 2001 and lives in St. Germain.

MERCER - MECCA Trails in Mercer has announced that the upcoming Winterfest is scheduled for January 17th, 2026. Hundreds of winter enthusiasts will compete in races of 5, 15 and 30k, in both classic and skating disciplines, plus a new event, the 20K skiathlon. Theres a race tailored for everyone who enjoys the outdoors. If January 17th doesn’t fit your plans, athletes can still participate virtually. WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING for Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties and Iron, Ashland, Bayfield and Vilas Counties in our listening area, the Watch area is likely to expand into much of the U.P. ...Heavy snow is expected at times along with blowing and drifting snow which could create whiteout conditions. Total snow accumulations of 12 inches or more are possible between tomorrow night and Thursday morning. Some models indicate 15 to 20 inches or more in snowbelt regions of Northern Iron Wisconsin along with in parts of Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties.  Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.
