HURLEY – Today is election day in Iron County and Throughout Wisconsin.  The only locally contested race is for two Mercer Board of Supervisors seats among Roxanne Lutgen, David McNutt, James Schmidt, and Kevin Towne, as Christan Brandt is not seeking re-election. Seven of 15 County Board seats are open due to six incumbents retiring and one vacant seat. Seats remain open in Sherman, Gurney/Saxon, and Montreal Ward 2. The Hurley City Council race includes Rita Franzoi despite her resignation. Joe Kasper is a write-in for both County Board and City Council. Incumbent Anthony J. Stella Jr. is running unopposed for Iron County Circuit Court judge.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Democrats are hoping to increase liberal control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court in an election that has focused largely on abortion rights as cases affecting congressional redistricting, union rights and other hot button issues also await. The race features Democratic-backed Chris Taylor and Republican-supported Maria Lazar. Both Taylor and Lazar are state appeals court judges. Liberals won control of the court in 2023, ending 15 years under a conservative majority. They held onto control in last year's vote.

GOGEBIC COUNTY - Highland Copper, and it’s Copperwood Mine Project near Wakefield, was directly credited in the Trump Administrations latest proclamation to expand U.S. mining interests.  A proclamation signed by President Trump will strengthen tariffs on imported steel, aluminum, and copper. It states this is to ‘more effectively’ handle potential national security threats posed by these imports. This includes the ‘economic resilience of vital industries and the financial position of American workers.  The proclamation also makes note of the creation of new aluminum and copper smelting companies. In July last year, copper was added to the Section 232 program to have the same 50% tariff rate as steel and aluminum.  The Protect the Porkies organization continues to speak against the Copperwood project saying that the jobs will only be temporary and the project will cause irreparable damage to the Porkies and Lake Superior.
