IRONWOOD – Above normal temperatures near 70 today and tomorrow expected to melt off the rest of the snow around the region then scattered thunderstorms are possible tomorrow afternoon and evening could be strong to severe. The Storm Prediction Center has a Slight Risk for severe storms for much of northwest Wisconsin tomorrow.

IRON COUNTY - After 32 years of service to Iron County, including the past eight as Sheriff, Sheriff Paul Samardich announced via social media that he will be stepping down. That after consultation with his family, he’s decided to retire at the conclusion of his current term. Samardich said he plans to fully endorse and support his Chief Deputy in the upcoming election, stating he believes in his proven leadership within Iron County and that his years of experience make him the best candidate to lead the Sheriff’s Department into the future. Samardich also stated that it has truly been, and remains, an honor to serve the community.

GOGEBIC COUNTY - Fourteen UP applicants will receive funding for 17 new state-approved CTE programs to help meet rising student demand and regional labor needs, including funding going to the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District thanks to a share of the $24.2 million in Career and Technical Education (CTE) expansion grants allocated by the Michigan Legislature and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer through the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).  Historically, CTE programs have been reserved for high school students. However, the latest funding opens the door to middle school CTE exposure in Michigan for the first time.  Districts will be incorporating middle school learning labs with hands-on, industry-aligned experiences. The Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District will receive $400,000 for High School Construction Trades as part of this round of funding.
