MICHIGAN - Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-Michigan) proposed Monday what she calls a comprehensive, sustainable, long-term plan to “fix the damn roads” for generations to come. According to a press release from the governor’s office, the $3 billion plan includes funds to help local communities fix local roads, boost transit, improve safety on the roads, and reduce the cost of vehicle repairs for Michigan drivers. According to the Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council, more of Michigan’s roads are now in good or fair condition. Whitmer says Michigan’s local communities still need a long-term solution to continue “fixing the damn roads” and to ensure Michiganders and companies can depend on reliable infrastructure across our state. For the funding to go into effect, it would need to be approved by the state House and Senate before heading to Whitmer’s desk.

MADISON - Wisconsin is joining Michigan and nearly two dozen other states in a lawsuit against the Trump administration to challenge cuts to public health research funding nationwide. The coalition of 22 states is suing the Trump Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health. The group of states is arguing against the attempted cut to “indirect cost” reimbursements at research institutions and universities, which cover costs for biomedical research. This could include costs for infrastructure, labs, faculty and utilities. The National Institutes of Health announced last week that it would make cuts to grants that support research institutions by limiting the amount of indirect funding for projects to 15%. Attorney General Josh Kaul argued that without these funds, lifesaving medical research could be halted. In response to the lawsuit, a White House spokesman said, “Contrary to the hysteria, redirecting billions of allocated NIH spending away from administrative bloat means there will be more money and resources available for legitimate scientific research, not less.”
