LAC DU FLAMBEAU — Despite threatening to block roads to residents, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians tribal leaders say they will keep roads open. The tribe set a January 16 deadline for the town to pay up, but Wednesday morning the tribal council voted to not put barricades back on the roads. They also will remove the barricades from the sides of the roads soon.  Lac du Flambeau tribal leaders have been threatening to close the roads for months.  The town was paying the tribe money to keep access to the four roads open but said they ran out of money last August.

VILAS COUNTY - Snowmobile trails in Vilas County opened for the season today.  The 11 Vilas County snowmobile clubs decided to open the trails after a vote Wednesday evening.  Vilas County officials are asking that riders follow early season riding guidelines, including watching your speed and staying to the right.  The current base of the trails are not very deep, so caution should be used especially at corners.  Vilas County has over 500 miles of state-funded and club-funded trails.  Iron County Snowmobile trails opened yesterday for the season and are reported to be in early season riding condition.  Riders are asked to stay on marked trails.
