MANITOWISH WATERS - Governor Tony Evers was in Manitowish Waters yesterday.  Evers was at the North Lakeland School District in Manitowish Waters to highlight his support for Wisconsin’s kids and schools. The Governor spoke on the importance of supporting smaller school districts, as well as next steps, after a months-long bipartisan agreement to send more funding to these areas failed earlier this month.  Throughout Governor Evers' two terms, educational support has been a top priority. For nearly eight years, he’s visited classrooms and spoke with teachers on their main concerns for the future of state support.  Earlier this month, Evers proposed a bipartisan surplus deal that would have sent $850 million from the state's budget surplus to tax filers and provide funding to school districts across the state. Evers' term is coming to an end in January, and with the next Governor being decided in November, chances are very slim that an agreement will be reached on the surplus money before then.

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer yesterday said she has “nothing to announce” about a possible 2028 presidential bid, stepping back her comment from hours earlier that she will not run for president after leaving office later this year.  Whitmer made those comments at a Mackinac conference yesterday.  Whitmer has long been viewed by some Democrats as a possible White House contender after her decisive election victories in the closely contested state that Republican Donald Trump has carried twice in presidential votes. Whitmer is term-limited and will be done after this year.  The Mackinac conference has become a hub of presidential speculation, with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Elissa Slotkin — both considered possible 2028 contenders — also in attendance.

IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Carnegie Library will host an open house today, starting with a welcome presentation, luncheon, and tours beginning at 11:30 a.m., with visiting hours to follow from 1 to 5 to showcase the new children’s addition. The project began in 2024 with a $750,000 state grant and additional support through a Friends of the Library fundraising campaign. Designed to match the historic building, the new woodland-themed space features children’s media and playful furnishings that have already earned approval from local students.
